Monday - Read and Discuss “Why We Crave”; in preparation for writing expository essay on “the good life”, read essays on pp. 314-343. Take notes re: author purpose and pattern of organization.

Tuesday - Assign expository essay. Prewriting: Brainstorming.  Due tomorrow: definition + potential pattern of organization.

Wednesday - Conference with teacher + writing

Thursday - In-class writing: first draft of expository essay due Wednesday 10/10.

Tuesday - In groups, answer questions 1, 2, 4, 7, 8 on p. 214 of LC(re: “School”).  Prepare to present responses tomorrow.

Wednesday- Guidance Presentation

Monday - In groups, research patterns of development in essay writing: narration, description, process, exemplification, comparison (contrast), classification/division, definition, cause/effect. Students then share info with classmates. Explain concept of post-it notes + read “Stone Soup” ”(in One Hundred Great Essays--OHGE--pp. 302-309) for Tues. Take notes in reading journal re: ethos, logos, pathos, allusion, anecdote.

Tuesday - Hand in revised summer assignment + Discuss “Stone Soup”; read “Serving in Florida”(in Language and Composition--LC--; pp. 394-403)for Wed. Take notes re: ethos, pathos, detail, point of view.

Wednesday - Discuss “Serving” ; read “The Right Stuff” (in OHGE; pp. 581-593) for Thurs. Take notes re: character development.
